View this email in your browser March 28, 2025 Neighbors and Friends: We are more than halfway through the 89th Legislative Session. I want to take a moment to reflect on the work we’re doing at the Capitol. Last month, we all experienced the loss of a true Texas giant. We said goodbye to former Congressman Sylvester Turner—a lifelong public servant, and a dear friend to my whole family. His leadership and unwavering commitment to the City of Houston will be missed. Every day at the Legislature, I think of his legacy and all of the lessons I learned watching him in the Texas House. In Austin, I am pushing forward with the work you sent me here to do. I’ve presented seven bills in committee so far, fighting for the resources and policies that will improve the lives of our neighbors. Despite our busy committee and Floor schedules, I always make time to meet with advocates and officials who travel from back home to advocate for House District 140 – including Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez and his team, Legacy and Hope Clinics and Aldine ISD. There’s still a lot of work ahead, but as always, I’m grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me to represent you. Let’s keep moving forward together. Rep. Armando Walle Rep. Walle Presents Seven Bills in Committee Hearings Rep. Walle has had the opportunity to present seven of his bills so far this Session. On March 17th, Rep. Walle presented his first piece of legislation, HB 618, which would expand insurance coverage for IVF treatments for state employees. Click on the video above to watch his presentation. Rep. Walle has also had committee hearings for the following bills: HB 252 — This bill amends the Government Code to expand the number of state employees who are eligible to be paid twice a month. HB 636 — This bill directs the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to collaborate with the Texas Homeless Network to create a homeless data sharing network. HB 932 — This bill would create an Interstate Compact for Occupational Therapist practitioners that would allow participating members to practice telehealth in participating Compact states outside of their own. HB 1846 — This bill creates an electric truck advisory council that oversees electric truck operations and infrastructure. HB 1918 — This bill limits water rate increases by Class A utilities to once every 36 months, with a maximum increase of 20%. HB 2578 — This bill limits the publicization of information regarding certain landlord tenant disputes by requiring courts to include the information their official monthly reports. Walle joined Workers Defense for a rally at the Capitol to push for better safety protections for Texas workers. Watch his speech in the video to the right. Rep. Walle Hosts Chairs of Key Natural Resources Agencies This month, Rep. Walle hosted a meeting with Chairwoman Brooke Paup (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality), Chairwoman L’Oreal Stepney (Texas Water Development Board), and Chairman Thomas Gleeson (Public Utilities Commission) to discuss critical funding for Texas’ natural resource agencies. Houstonians Remember Congressman Sylvester Turner at Celebration of Life Event On March 15th, Rep. Walle and his family attended Congressman Sylvester Turner’s celebration of life memorial in Houston. “He was more than a colleague,” Rep. Walle wrote on X. “He was family. Walle Hosts Town Hall to Discuss Legislation to Address Concrete Batch Plants In February, Rep. Walle partnered with Air Alliance Houston and BakerRipley to host a town hall in HD 140 to discuss potential legislation to address issues related to concrete batch plants in Harris County. This Session, Rep. Walle has filed HB 3043, which would allow a qualifying representative of a school, place of worship, licensed day-care center, hospital, medical facility, or a person residing within 440 yards of a concrete batch plant to request a hearing regarding a permit application. Harris County Public Health and Houston Health Department Offer Measles Vaccine Drives Harris County Public Health and the Houston Health Department are offering the MMR vaccine to protect Texans against measles, mumps and rubella. At Harris County Public Health, appointments are currently required, although same-day appointments may be available. Please call 832-927-7350 to schedule an appointment. Alvarado passed legislation to rename the section of HWY 59 between Little York and the Beltway the Deputy Sheriff Darren Almendarez Memorial Highway. Rep. Christina Morales: Concrete Batch Plant Public Meeting Thursday, May 1st, 2025 7:00 PM 3000 North Loop West Freeway Houston, TX 77092 Rep. Christina Morales from neighboring district HD 145 has requested a public meeting for a proposed renewal of a concrete batch plant on West Hardy Road. 95,000 Texas children are waiting for state help to pay for day care | Texas Tribune (Rep. Armando Walle) asked for an additional $181 million, but his request was added to Article XI, the place for wishlist items in the House’s budget proposal. “This session, I've been working with stakeholders to serve another 10,000 kids on the waitlist each year,” Walle said. “I am hopeful that I can continue working with Chairman Bonnen and House leadership to help these children.” Will lawmakers let Texas’ maternal mortality committee review abortion deaths? | Texas Tribune HB 731, filed by (Rep. Armando Walle), would restore Texas to the federal system, which committee leaders have said is essential for tracking and improving maternal health outcomes in Texas and the nation. At a June meeting, Ortique spoke about attending a national conference and seeing the importance of data sharing between states, especially for a state that represents more than 10% of births in the country.
